Where our pictures come from

Artist portraits

Artist portraits may come from event-data providers or Wikimedia Commons. A portrait from Commons has that file's available creator and licence information listed under Photo credits. When another source supplies credit information, we print it there too.

Marketing preview portraits

The local website preview records six Commons portraits inside its product films. The capture uses a read-only snapshot of the exact artist-image bytes served by the app at capture time, and the app crops them where a tile or ticket requires it. Their appearance identifies show data and does not imply that an artist or photographer endorses Stubs.

These credits document the copyright attribution used by the local preview. Public use still requires a separate review of publicity and personality rights.

Venue photographs

Wikimedia Commons, matched to the venue by name and city so the picture is of the room you are reading about. That file's photographer and licence are listed under Photo credits.

Where the files are served from

When a catalogue picture has been copied into our storage, the app serves that copy. While a copy is pending or unavailable, the app may load the original file from its source. The credit continues to name and link to the original source where that information is available.

How we find the right picture

Names are ambiguous and a picture of the wrong room is worse than no picture, so finding one takes a chain of open reference and mapping data rather than a single lookup. Venue place data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, made available under the Open Database Licence.

Aerial and street views

When a venue has no photograph, we may show it from above or from the street using the device platform's mapping service. Those views carry the provider's own mark and legal link inside the image, and we never crop them out.

When there is no photograph

The app prints a designed plate instead: the artist's name set as a poster, the venue's name on ticket stock. Nothing is borrowed, so there is nothing to credit.

Photographs people took at shows

Stub photos are posted by users, who must have the rights to share them. They appear beside the poster's handle and are removed when the poster deletes them.

What we cannot credit

Not every photograph in the app has credit data behind it. Some catalogue providers do not supply creator or licence metadata, some files on Commons do not name a photographer in their record, and some pictures were gathered before we started recording where each one came from. Where we have no credit, we print none rather than invent one.

Why credits are in one place

Credits are printed under Photo credits and not on the artist and venue pages themselves. Creative Commons permits this: attribution may be given "in any reasonable manner based on the medium, means, and Context in which You Share the Licensed Material", including "by providing a URI or hyperlink to a resource that includes the required information" (CC BY 4.0 §3(a)(2), and the same words in CC BY-SA 4.0). Each entry prints the available creator and licence data and links to the file's page on Commons, which is where the licence text lives.

A Commons file may be cropped by the app to fit a tile or ticket. Credits identify the source and modification, and a crop from a ShareAlike file remains available under the same ShareAlike licence.

If a photograph in Stubs is yours and is credited wrongly, or not at all, tell us at legal@joinstubs.com and we will correct it or take it down.
